On May 5, 2013 at the “Downtown Independent” theatre a film entitled “The Revolution Will Not be Televised” (a play on the song by the late Gil Scott-Heron) about Hugo Chavez and the attempted coup during his presidency around 2002 was shown by KPFK radio. Radio host Margaret Prescod moderated the event and actor-activist Danny Glover gave his thoughts & comments after the movie, along with a third person (sorry, I didn’t catch his name) who was very familiar with Venezuela politics.
I have not followed the poltics of Venezuela very closely but recently heard an old classmate of mine (who is now a professor) on KPFK talking about Venezuela,…and of course the death of Chavez and the recent election has been in the news…and KPFK has been talking about the issues a lot..and Chavez seems to have captured the hearts of a lot of people beyond Venezuela…so I’ve started to try to learn more..and this film helped shed some light…
…I still have some questions…and don’t just “jump on the bandwagon” in a knee-jerk manner…and am more conservative than most KPFK listeners but I do have an open-mind. There are issues of the liberals which I support, especially immigration and various social welfare matters, and as long as they don’t start banging the gay marriage drum around me I can listen (and sometimes learn) …(and they are somewhat quiet now re “abortion rights” which I am also opposed to…I say protect unborn life )…
KPFK has some good news..and if they can stay consistently on some of the major issues without going off on the two items I just mentioned I may keep listening (also, if they can refrain from blaming everything on Bush. I recently heard Lila Garrett (“Connect the Dots”) actually call Obama a hypocrite (not in those words but in her description of his m.o. ) on 5/6/13 so maybe there’s hope that some of the liberals are realizing what’s going on finally..
